Places
Places; being only people,
can easily depress
if we forget the possibilities
are here and now.

The hugest whole
may be nowhere
to house the soul.

Location is of mind,
where we can find
some kindred kind.
Although the spot be small
it’s not at all the size
compels, we realize the
finite probability of find,
nor mind the many, who
we may not ever meet.
To be complete
some warm retreat
is most times self sufficient,
to the why we went.

And though our finite fear
induces panic, that it is not here,
where love and life and destiny will meet,
another street, or different place,
perhaps provides the face,
but not the case for proving
that the moving of the scene
can mean serenity,
or something new discovered
of the world.

The possibilities have always
been of here and now.

  1. Sometimes all we truly need to do is look and the place my show more and become more than we presume, nice verse!

  2. Hardly need I leave my back yard to discover, to realize, to become aware. Other places beckon...the lure is not just the place, but as you say--also the people. My freedom can loose itself with strangers, because probability is, I may never see them agai. Much as I might wish.

You are some goo writer, James

  3. Love this softly undulating and stimulating piece James which causes one to question, assess, and give place to a new internal dialogue. Beautifully done, James at his best!

  4. These lines resonate with me:

    Location is of mind,
    where we can find
    some kindred kind.

I wouldn't mind the place (even a small or crowded one) if we meet our kindred or like mind ~

  5. nice james...love the flow and dance to your words...i get caught up in it...places hold significance but only to the experience and often tot he people i have met there...returning i find them rekindled but without the person they are often hollow...

  6. When I read this out loud, the poem gains another life as the internal rhyme enhances the meaning of the words and how they react to the ones before and influence the ones that follow. Wonderful poetry.

These lines stayed with me from your piece--the why may be more important than the where

  8. Really enjoy the way you twist the words around to wring out all their meaning--the opening lines are an instant hook, well echoed in the closing advice, to understand the art of wanting what you have. Fine poem, James.

  9. I love this poem. There are so many hidden layers. Even some words are conjured from beneath by your use of rhyme and words so well chosen.
